Scotland’s Julie Forrest and Lancashire’s Mark Dawes produced a powerhouse display in the opening set of their @Imagine Cruising World Mixed Pairs Matchplay campaign, dominating from the beginning to run out 10-4 winners.
They only dropped two ends, hitting back from a 2-3 deficit, they counted a single, treble and double to move 7-3 ahead, and although they conceded a single on the sixth end, they swung the result on the last two ends 10-4.
The second set was a game of two jack lengths with the ‘reds’ - Julie and Mark, preferring a shortish length while the ‘greens’ - Katherine and Les ventured down the longer route.
Although they looked to be cruising in the second set and led 4-0 at three ends and 5-2 at six ends, Julie and Mark failed to score again, while Katherine and Les slowly clawed their way back into contention with successive singles which left them requiring a double on the last to take the set and force a tiebreak.
But in the final reckoning they could only garner a single as that evasive double never materialised and therefore drew the set 5-5.
That score though was good enough to give Julie and Mark a passage through to tomorrow’s semi-finals by one and a half sets to a half. They will continue against holders Alison Merrien MBE from Guernsey and Ayrshire’s Paul Foster MBE.
MATCH 2 - Julie Forrest (Scot) & Mark Dawes (Eng) bt Katherine Rednall & Les Gillett (Eng) 10-4, 5-5.
