The second match of the afternoon session was a real showpiece exchange between three time former winners Greg Harlow and Nicky Brett from England against seven time Welsh Qualifiers Damian Doubler and Daniel Salmon.
Doubler and Salmon are opponents not to be taken lightly and lost in the final in 2017 to Les Gillett and Jason Greenslade and their match today kept the packed arena on the edge of their seats.
The first set was tied at 4-4 with two ends to play but unfortunate results for the English pair saw the Welsh twosome count back to back trebles to take the set 10-4.
The second set was a nip and tuck affair, with the score line locked at 2-2 and 4-4 after six ends.
On the seventh, Brett struck the head and sprung the jack to the left hand rink marker and they held a few shots, but a magnificent last bowl trail of the jack to the ditch gave the Welsh duo the shot, and it was a similar situation of the eighth end with Wales once again benefitting with a single.
In an intense ninth and deciding end, the shot swayed back and forth in a tightly packed head, but Brett and Harlow could only muster a single shot and they missed out 6-5, leaving Doubler and Salmon with a berth in the quarter finals on Monday night (13th January) at 7.30pm against the winner of the match between MBE's Paul Foster & Alex Marshall or Irish qualifiers Matthew Crawford and Mark Foster.
